Todros Grynhaus found guilty of sexual assault

Todros Grynhaus was convicted on all seven charges

Jewish teacher turned businessman is facing a ''substantial'' jail sentence after being found guilty of seven sex abuse charges on Tuesday.

Todros Grynhaus, 50, was convicted of five counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault against the girls when they were aged around 14 and 15.

Grynhaus, a prominent member of the Charedi community in Salford, was accused of a course of conduct against the two alleged victims over a number of years which involved touching them inappropriately and forcing himself on them.

He denied the allegations, saying he was the victim of a “revenge plot” and that the girls, now adult women, were lying.

But he was convicted after a two-week trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Wearing glasses and dressed in a black suit with open-collar white shirt, Grynhaus showed no emotion as he was unanimously found guilty of three charges of indecent assault, and of the four other charges by a majority verdict of 10-2.

The verdicts were returned after 10 hours deliberation.

They came after a previous trial in February ended with the jury failing to come to a decision and a retrail ordered.

The judge Mr Justice Timothy Holroyde told Grynhause: “The nature of the offences involved a high degree of manipulative behaviour coupled with a refusal to acknowledge any wrongdoing whatsoever. While I appreciate many years have passed I am not minded to say here and now that no finding of dangerousness should be made.

”You have been convicted of these serious offences. A substantial prison sentence is inevitable but before deciding the appropriate sentence I will welcome the assistance of a probation report.”
The judge thanked the jury. “It has, I am sure, been a difficult exercise for you. I must find out if he is a danger to the public in the future even though we have learnt a great deal about him in the course of this trial.”

Sentencing is expected in four weeks.

  2. Yidden are not chas vesholom worse, or more evil, than other people. In fact, our holy Torah teaches us to be sensitive and to act with a great degree of decency towards others.

Unfortunately there are a few bad apples in the kehilla and we have to protect our children from them.

Please send this to your Rav.

Following the conviction of Rabbi Grynhaus for sexual offences against children -activities which had been left unchallenged by prominent Rabbonim and laymen for over thirty years as a public menace; the shanda in Australia, and recent trials and the conviction of a local man in Golders Green, I call upon the the Rav as a matter of the greatest urgency to publicly announce a child protection policy for our shul which: -

    1) Clearly lays out that child abuse must be reported to the police without the intervention of any third party including the Rav.

    2) That any member or individual who reports such abuse will not be discriminated against by any individual or institution in any matters as a result of such reporting and in particular that the Rav will publicly decry any such discrimination and the names of the individuals responsible for it, and support reporting of the same to the police insofar as it conflicts with the laws of perversion of the course of justice and witness intimidation.

    3) That those who pose a risk to children are not permitted on the shul premises.

    4) Designating a named individual to act as a designated CSA contact.

    5) Publicly declaiming those who apologise or cover up for child abusers, however holy their father.

It is clear that we are dealing with the tip of the iceberg. Not just the innocence and mental health of our children, but the very credibility of Orthodoxy itself is at risk. Are we a self immolating cult of Molech, sacrificing our youngest and most vulnerable to preserve the facade of unity and the crumbling power of the Rabbinate - or are we a genuinely spiritual community who will answer the challenge "Mi LaHashem Elai!".

Looking back at our history in this matter over the past fifty years has been a torrid nexus of communal politics, religion - yes, we cannot deny that those of us with longest beards have had the most to hide - and the primal depths of depravity. How dare we lecture others on morality, how dare we sneer at the Goyim, when we as a community become so steeped and unmoved by the utmost immorality. The Rav should set a lead without peering over his (right) shoulder for one second at what others are doing; or we will pay for it with our children and grandchildren. Those are the children and grandchildren who we toss away as if they were easy to come by; we called them liars when they told the truth; but a yiddisher kind is a precious and rare commodity indeed, and one day we will miss them.

If in fifty years time all the shuls and shtiebelech of England lie empty, and the mesorah of five thousand years has a torch bearer no more and our children have gone to be like the nations who are around us - if this happens, will know that it was not our children who dropped the light.

    It was us.

  5. What a load of codswallop.
You silly puffed up pompous nobody.
Don't denegrate a thriving Charedi Anglo community .
The tiny number of perverts in its midst are almost irrelevant to the community that is growing and will continue to grow despite nasty denigrators like

As always matthew misses the point. It's not the abusers who pose a theological problem. It's the the abundance of bearded matthews who cover up for them over many many years.

  9. It has now been confirmed: the fool Dovid Cohn, whose shul is deservedly falling to pieces, attended Charlie's wedding. So much for running the beis din to "sort this out". With rabbis such as these, who needs madmen and criminals?
