£55,000 offered to 3 witnesses to withdraw their Testimony

An interesting story, verified by more than one source.

Last week, a SH man who does private investigative work in the community, was visited by a delegation of 3 people – 2 individuals closely related to CH, and a third individual, who identified himself as an emissary of [...]. This third individual had with him a briefcase containing £55,000 in cash. Once initial introductions were out of the way, this unlikely trio put forward the following request. Would it be possible for this man to use the money in the briefcase to convince 3 witnesses in the case against CH to withdraw their testimony, or to modify it so that it was not so devastating? He would, of course, be handsomely rewarded if he succeeded.

The private investigator, a man who obviously has more integrity then all the 3 of his visitors put together, responded by telling them that he would need to consult his rav in Israel before making a decision. The rav in question, a distinguished sefardi rabbi with a large following, responded to this story by telling his devotee in London to keep well away, and noted that the money would be much better spent elsewhere.

The plan was thus thwarted, although one wonders whether other less scrupulous people were also approached and did accept the offer made by the
3 musketeers, and attempted to nobble witnesses in the ongoing enquiry.

One final piece – when one of the family member in question was confronted about this episode by the BD he not only confirmed it, but supplied further details.

How is it possible that a rabbi as distinguished as [...] could have sunk so low to become involved in such a sordid attempt to pervert the course of justice? What a disgrace.
