Injury to Shomrim volunteer sparks row with police

A volunteer with a community security group, Shomrim, suffered a fractured skull and hemorrhage after responding to a crime scene in Golders Green in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

The father-of-three had responded alongside colleagues after a number of Orthodox Jews reported being hit by eggs thrown from a car. The members of the security group tracked the vehicle and surrounded it until police officers arrived.

Eyewitnesses told The Jewish Chronicle that police officers did not cooperate with the Shomrim members or speak with them.

“When the police arrived, they would not approach the [surrounded] suspects. The police [instead] busied themselves by ordering the Shomrim members to move their vehicles, thus giving a safe passage for the suspects to escape which resulted in a hit and run. When Hatzolah medics arrived they were told by police to park their cars properly which delayed [giving] urgent medical attention to the injured Shomrim member].”

It is understood that the volunteer, who is in his 40s, was subsequently knocked unconscious and suffered serious injuries after falling from the car's bonnet shortly before the vehicle sped from the scene.

Shomrim chairman Sheldon Bodner denied the volunteer was at fault.

“Shomrim have worked alongside police for the last 5 years protecting the community from all aspects of crime, at this incident our volunteers followed full protocol until the arrival of police," he said. "We feel the direct result of the actions taken by police seriously jeopardized the safety of our members."

Barnet police commander Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher said the incident was still under investigation. He rejected claims his officers were to blame.

An 18-year-old man from Finchley was arrested later on Thursday and questioned on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been bailed to return to a police station next month.

מתנדב של ארגון 'השומרים' בלונדון מאושפז מאז יום חמישי בבוקר בבית חולים מקומי, כשהוא סובל משבר ודימום בראשו, זאת בעקבות תקרית קשה שאירעה בשכונת גולדרס גרין. 

בשעות לפנות בוקר של יום חמישי, גויים מקומיים נסעו במהירות ברכב בכבישי השכונה, חלפו סמוך לקבוצת בחורי ישיבה, השליכו לעברם ולעבר רכבים בבעלות יהודית ביצים ונמלטו מן המקום. 

במוקד 'השומרים' התקבל דיווח על זריקת הביצים, ומתנדבים של הארגון הגיעו במהירות לאזור, הצליחו לאתר את הרכב וחסמו אותו מכל הכיוונים עד לבואה של המשטרה. 

תפיסתם של זורקי הביצים שימחה את תושבי השכונה, מאחר ובשנה האחרונה הפך הדבר לתופעה שהטרידה את מנוחתם של התושבים. אלא שהשמחה הייתה מוקדמת - בזמן שהמתנדבים המתינו לבואם של כוחות המשטרה, רכב זורקי הביצים נמלט מהמקום ופגע באחד המתנדבים. 

המתנדב איבד את ההכרה ופונה עם פציעות קשות לבית חולים מקומי הסמוך לזירה. 

עדי ראייה מאשימים את המשטרה בכך שהתרשלה בטיפול במקרה: "במקום לעצור את זורקי הביצים, המשטרה התעסקה בהזזת הרכבים של חברי הארגון", העידו. 

שלדון בודנר, יו"ר הארגון בלונדון אמר: "אני חושש שפעילות המשטרה גרמה לאחד מחברינו נזק רציני". 

מפקד המשטרה דחה בתגובה את האשמות, וציין כי האירוע נמצא בחקירה. בחור בן 18 משכונה סמוכה נעצר זמן קצר לאחר האירוע ונחקר בחשד לניסיון רצח. הוא שוחרר כעבור זמן מה בערבות כספית
