ישיבת הרמ"ה בסטמפורד היל בלונדון מצא את האשמים בפטירתו הפתאומית של הרב
יוסף שלמה ברגר, בן 27 שנפטר לפני שבוע לאחר שהתמוטט בביתו כתוצאה מדלקת ריאות
שהסתבכה.
במכתב שכתב הרב הוא קובע כי פטירתו של האברך שהותיר אחריו רעייה ושני ילדים, דורשת מכל אחד ואחד, "התבוננות". במיוחד מאנשים המגדירים עצמם כ"בני תורה".
אז מה עושים כדי למנוע מצבים כאלו בעתיד? "להתחזק בענין שדברנו כבר על החיוב להתפלל על שלומם של התלמידי חכמים שבעיר, ובכל אתר ואתר, כמו שתקנו הקדמונים להתפלל בשבת קודש אחר קריאת התורה 'תפילת יקום פורקן', ולאומרו בכוונה כי אינו דומה תפילה בכוונה מעומק הלב, לתפילה באמירה בעלמא".

Rabbi Elyakim Schlesenger, a Rosh Yeshiva in London, has blamed the sudden death of a 27-year-old married yeshiva student from pneumonia on those in the Haredi community who have denigrated or embarrassed Chaim Halpern, who is currently under police questioning for allegedly sexually abusing several women he was counseling.
Rabbi Elyakim Schlesenger's statement, reported by Behadrei Haredi, is meant to attack those Haredim who are cooperating with the police investigation against Halpern.
Halpern, who heads his own London synagogue, was an unlicensed marriage counselor.
Oh yeah of little faith. How can you doubt - even momentarily - that harhag E Schlezinger, tzadik yesod olom, was privy to giluy Eliyohu just last week and was told in no uncertain terms the cause of death of this young avreich was because elements of the kehilla are ridiculing a great and honourable talmid chochom and the rest of us have not taken up his defence sufficiently?

Rav Schlesinger shlit"o uses an abbreviation which can be read as singular or plural (talmid chochom or talmidei chachomim). I readily assume that he is using it in the plural both times in that sentence and is simply saying that there has sadly been a huge amount of bizoyon of talmidei chachominm in London over the past many months and that it has not been dealt with properly (lo mochinu kidebo'i) and we should be doing tshuva about that. I don't think anyone could disagree with this. Why read it differently? For my part I am hereby mocheh against the absurd and egregious bizyon t"ch constituted by this post and its heading.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. He could easily be referring to the bizayon of Rav Padwa following the TV programme, of Rav Chuna Halpern Shlita, of the GG Rabonnim who OPPOSED RCH.

The above is a transcript of a speech he gave. Perhaps he did in fact use the singular? If this is the case, would you retract your statement completely?
Kornbluth is right. He says Bizyoinom and not Bizyoino, so he is not really referring to RCH but to Rabonim in general who have certainly taken a bashing in the last 9 months. In my opinion though much of it sadly well deserved.

DeleteI didn't say that R'ES does not have a great yichus - you say he does, and I am sure each of his ancestors were kedoshim & tehorim whom I can only dream of one day possibly reaching as high as their ankles - what I said was that (unlike a NW11 rov who found it sufficient to invoke the wrath of his deceased holy ancestors) R' ES didn't do so one would assume because of the yichus issue, which left him with no other alternative other than the tragedy which befell the kehilla with the petirah of this young avreich.

One of his ancestors is the Baal Shem of Mischelstadt, Another Reb Getchy Shleisinger of Shleisingen (near Humburg), another Reb Yaakov Rosenheim, & his wife is a daughter of Reb Moshe Blau,& belive me there are many more before & after.
I know you chassidim are very quick to brand people as baalei ruach hakoidesh, kedoishim and tehoirim, but Reb Yakov Rosenheim? Founder of a political party? Do me a favour!

ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that R’ ES is a product of outstanding pedigree. However, can you, or anyone, give an alternative – yet valid – reason for laying the blame of this avreich’s untimely petirah upon the lack of respect for talmid/ei chochom/im? For no matter how far you have convinced me that R’ ES is of fine pedigree, I am even more convinced that his proclamation is not based on a bas kol, giluy Eliyohu or any other divine message.
The day before this catastrophe, there was another tragic Petirah. A young yeshiva bochur, Moshe Yuda Leib Scharf z”l, a talmid in the Chernobyl Yeshiva Bnei Braq did not awaken. Perhaps this is because Rav Steinman publicised his opinion not to participate in the anti-draft demonstrations, so favoured by the two warring Satmar Rebbes? Or, is it because of the nearly 20 years of infighting and hatred between the contenders for the leadership of Yeshivas Ponevezh? Maybe we are to blame for that tragedy too?
On Friday, 5 college students were fatally shot in California, whilst just hours ago there was a magnitude 5 earthquake not far from the Tongan Coast; perhaps we can lay the blame for these tragedies at a lack of respect for talmidei chachomim?
The Ribono Shel Olom knows the reason why these tragedies befall us, for each of these tragedies is part of a greater plan of which we, mere mortals, are totally ignorant. We do know that they are also designed to spur us on into repenting properly, which most of us seem to either ignore or lapse back into old bad habits shortly after. Whilst an odom godol is at times able to ascribe a particular type or group of events to a specific class of transgression, any man who attempts to pinpoint an individual passing from this world to a specific aveiroh or middoh - be it slits in skirts, real-hair sheitels, going on holidays, carrying in an eiruv, driving German cars, not going to the mikvah before shachris every morning or showing unfettered disrespect for a TC – is talking a load of Baal Shem!
This young man's tragedy is a tragedy for satmar 26 not for anything else. Most likely the people there being from 'within' have no idea what they do wrong and also perhaps scared of voicing an opinion even when they do have an idea.
ReplyDeleteInstead of taking an outside rov to also give them some mussar they kept it 'inhouse' and only called their 'own'. This is not the place to give opinions on satmar 26 except what is known in public and that is they dont have a daf yomi shiur or for that matter any other regular shiur by their rov. This to me is much more reason for a tragedy to befall them.
From this report it seems the deceased was a Satmar Chossid from a prominent Satmar family and Hareidi activist from that part of London who are among the strongest supporters of Chaim Halpern.
