R' Dovid Cohn - Victims of abuse to report to the Authorities

[1 February 2013]
Clarification

I wish to make it clear that the Haloche requires that cases involving criminal activity must be reported to the authorities (social services or police) without delay. Victims of crime who do so, will of course be given all appropriate support. Where criminal activity is only suspected, the above also applies, however care must then be taken to ascertain that these concerns do indeed have a reasonable basis.
May God grant all of us the protection necessary to ensure that the situation never occurs in practice.
Good Shabbos
Rabbi Cohn

  3. One wonders why this is appearing on this blog now. And why on the initiative (apparently) of Rabbi Cohn (and not the UOHC who commissioned him to be the gofer for their Beth Din re Chaim Halpern)? Rabbi Cohn is renowned as a man of the utmost integrity. Are there no other rabbis of equal integrity within the UOHC to issue similar guidance? We know of course that a group of very eminent Dayanim and other renowned rabbonim of Golders Green issued a Gilui Daas declaring that Chaim Halpern had committed acts for which one should suffer martyrdom rather than commit them, and that he was unfit to hold or carry out any rabbinical office. It would be interesting to know whether Rabbi Cohn believes their concerns have a reasonable basis or not. If not, should that not be publicised? If he does believe their concerns were reasonable, should he not publicize the fact? Surely if the concerns of the Gilui Daas Dayanim and rabbonim have a reasonable basis, there is at least a suspicion on which he and others should be going to the police about Chaim Halpern?

    1. Adloyada.. Did you not recognise this letter from other blogs around 8 mnths ago. Why bother postulating, theorising and wasting your breath.. We all know it all (the whole scandal in fact) boils down to a lack of leadership from the charity commission.

  4. Adloyada, on what do you base your theory that this letter is in response to the alleged events of A Rov, 30 women, UOHC & a giluy daas? Maybe it has been brought out because of another case of abuse? Just last week a man from the NW London haredi kehilla was sentenced to 3 years and another man is on trail for the most despicable and heinous crimes. I am sure that a Rov in Rb Cohn's position is privy to information regarding other incidents too, all of which may have been averted or at least restricted somewhat, by the victims or their confidants going to the police without believing it's forbidden?

Secondly, do you believe there are Rabbonim in UOHC with any integrity?

Thirdly, many allegations have been made, and the giluy daas, as you state, notes that the individual referred to is unfit to act in a rabbinic or counselling role, but there was never any indication that the severity was of the nature that requires martyrdom rather than commit such an Aveiro.

Much as you may dislike R' CH personally, you cannot lay the blame for every iniquity at his size 9s.

    1. Throw him out of London, and he'll set up shop wherever he lands. It is not a system that works well, after all didn't Manchester throw him out? Look what that has done to us!
